JOHN WILSON CARMICHAEL (1799-1868) THE BARQUE "ELIZA JOHNSTON" AND OTHER SHIPPING NEAR A HARBOUR signed, oil on canvas, 57 x 89cmThe vessel is probably the 216-ton barque 'Eliza Johnston' built at Liverpool in 1834 for an owner called Johnston, with a registered voyage of 'Liverpool-Brazils' from 1835 to 1837. Her master was A Petrie until at least 1840 (although he was relieved, briefly in 1838 by one 'Johnston'). By 1850 the master is recorded as 'Donaldson'. There is no later record in Lloyd's Register.The port has not been identified but may be on the Atlantic coast of Iberia.
