A ROSEWOOD WALL CLOCK JOHNSON DERBY, C1855-60 of domestic regulator type with high quality twin fusee movement with shouldered plates, painted dial and original steel hands, mock mercury pendulum in arched case with hinged flap in the top, carved corbels and pendant, 110cm h, original keyEdward Johnson of Derby was appointed maker to the Admiralty and held First Class Certificates from both Greenwich and Kew Observatories. His prominent Derby shop was advertised as "Having the largest stock of silver and gold watches outside London." He was succeeded by his son, the shop finally closing in the 1930s.
