AN INSCRIBED PURPLE MARBLED LUSTRE PEARLWARE PUNCH BOWL, PROBABLY NEWCASTLE, C1835 the interior with transfer print of 'Young Cottagers', the 'Mariner's Arms' and two verses 'Says Sylvia to a Reverend Priest' and ' FriendS are Like Leaves' divided by stylised flowers, in black enamel borders, the exterior with 'Tynemouth Haven' and the Sunderland Bridge, inscribed "Wm & Johanna Courtis. Rebecca Courtis Born 3rd Septr 1831 Wm Courtis B orn 3rd April 1833 Charles Courtis Born 18th June 1835", on a diaper ground, 23cm diamProvenance: The Tolson Collection of Sunderland Lustre, Sotheby's, 5 February 1998, lot 362 to the present vendor.William Courtis (Curtis) (1807-1885) Master Mariner of Fore Street, Polruan, Cornwall. According to his Master's Certificate (No 36.442) issued at Fowey on 30 December 1850, he was born at Polruan on 14th October 1807, where he had "been employed as Master in the coasting trade nine years". His wife Johanna was born in 1811 and died in 1887. Of his children, those named on this bowl were all baptised at Lanteglos by Fowey, Rebecca on 18 September 1831, William on 19 May 1833 and Charles on 12 July 1835.
