A REGENCY MAHOGANY DRESSING TABLE BY GILLOWS

A REGENCY MAHOGANY DRESSING TABLE BY GILLOWS, EARLY 19TH C with concave front and fitted five drawers on reeded tapering turned legs with brass castors, the turned knob, brass locks and castors original, 85cm h; 63 x 114cm, drawer stamped GILLOWS. LANCASTER, one brass lock stamped CHIMINSA number of other examples of Gillows five drawer mahogany dressing tables, all of the usual superb quality, are recorded. Several were often supplied at a time, for example the six ordered by William Powlett, 2nd Baron Bolton (1782-1850) for Hackwood, Hampshire in May 1813 and four sold Christie's, 20-22 April 1998, lots 356-360. Four were also ordered by Richard Gascoigne for Parlington Hall, Aberford in 1811, one of which is in the collection of Leeds Art Gallery at Lotherton Hall (see Gilbert, vol II, pp 375-6 and fig 500. Yet more examples were supplied to Broughton Hall, Tatton Park and Harewood House.
