A NOTTINGHAM SALTGLAZED BROWN STONEWARE MUG

A NOTTINGHAM SALTGLAZED BROWN STONEWARE MUG, MORLEY'S BECK BARNS POTTERY, DATED 1725 incised with two bands of scrolling foliage, 11cm hThis newly discovered mug is one of a series of dated examples, four of which were shown in the Nottingham City Museum and Art Gallery's exhibition Nottingham Salt-Glazed Stoneware 1690-1800, 2010, Catalogue nos 38-41. They are dated 1720, 1722, 1723 and 1727. The same characteristic small petalled flowers and slightly offset handle also appears on contemporary Morley loving cups. The products of the Beck Barns Pottery during the 1720s are especially well potted, unusually light and decorated in a particularly pleasing, free style.
