[ELIOT, GEORGE pseudonym of EVANS, MARY ANNE] - A FAMILY ARCHIVE OF MATERIAL RELATING TO THE EVANS FAMILY, INCLUDING 3 ITEMS SIGNED BY MARY ANNE EVANS comprising: I) An undated letter written by Mary Ann Evans to 'Fanny' (Evans, her half-sister by their common father, Robert Evans Senior), and signed "Marian Evans";II) A small book (Isaac Watts, Psalms Hymns etc., published 1828) presented by Mary Anne Evans to Mrs Houghton (Fanny Houghton nee Evans), with inscription on front free end-paper "Mrs Houghton with the love of her affectionate sister Mary Anne" and dated March 31 1836, with a further written quotation by Mary Anne below (taken from The Psalms), the book in a fine 'cathedral' binding by Remnant & Edmonds of London, with their stamp at bottom of both boards; III) A small book (The Book of Psalms, published in London by Hamilton, Adams, and Co, early 19th century) presented by Mary Anne Evans with inscription on front free end-paper "Mrs Houghton with the love of her sister Mary Ann May 1838", the book bound in a red leather wallet-style binding;IV) A copy of the 'George Eliot Birthday Book' (title page missing but circa 1879/1880), in green publisher's cloth (missing spine), with numerous entries, 19th century and later, of birthdays and deaths of many members of the Evans family and others, some entries signed in person;V) Correspondence between various family members and Gordon S Height, the American publisher of the 7-volume 'George Eliot Letters', with several references to the letter mentioned above;VI) An undated mid-19th century letter from Sarah Ann Evans, wife of Mary Anne Evans' half-brother (Robert Evans, by their common father, Robert Evans Senior) to "Eva";VII) Several dozen other related/unrelated items including: 19th century photographs of members of the Evans family; an 'Army & Navy Birthday Book' circa 1890 with m/s entries for the Evans family and others; an 1859 letter to Mary Anne's half-brother Robert Evans signed "Newcastle" (5th Duke of Newcastle); various family trees, indenture documents, printed material, etc.Provenance: by descent, from members of the Evans family and related families of Allen and others, much of the material having been passed down through several generations, and worthy of further research.
