BOOTH

BOOTH, CHARLES - LIFE AND LABOUR OF THE PEOPLE IN LONDON: THIRD SERIES London, Macmillan and Co, 1902-1903. Seven volumes including the 7th 'Summary' volume, 8vo, numerous folding coloured maps, original parchment-paper boards, some soiling, titles and spines with library acquisition numbers, occasional internal staining not affecting maps. The complete Third Series of Booth's monumental socio-economic survey of London, compiled and written in response to an 1886 Pall Mall Gazette article which claimed that 25% of Londoners lived in poverty. Booth - who regarded this figure as wildly exaggerated - recruited a team of volunteer researchers to compile an analysis of social conditions based on field visits and interviews. The volumes here contain numerous folding maps of different areas of London, showing poverty/wealth (down to individual house level), colour-coded from black (lowest class) to yellow (wealthy), with 5 other classes in-between. Very scarce. Provenance: from the library of St John's College, Nottingham (7)
