First limited edition, numbered 1 of 250, THE AUTHOR'S PERSONAL COPY, SIGNED, AND WITH PENCIL ANNOTATIONS. Thick 8vo, coloured plates of military uniforms, black and white photographic and other illustrations. Signed by the author, with his bookplate on inner front board, his personal calling-card pasted in, and some pencil annotations to the text. In the original very fine binding by Riviere & Son of full red calf, boards with outer triple gilt fillet, upper board with large gilt armorial stamp of the Prince of Wales's Volunteers 1st Battalion, spine fully gilt with contrasting black and tan labels, upper compartment with a gilt crown and the letters 'XL' (for 40th Regiment) below, inner gilt dentelles, binder's stamp to front-free end-paper, all edges gilt. Housed in the original (now slightly faded/worn) cloth-covered book-box. A very fine and handsome copy
